General Summary

The Extrusion Process Development Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing new processes, process improvements, and products for the rapidly growing Deckorators division within UFP Industries. The incumbent will drive improvements in productivity, product quality, and product performance.

Works under general direction of the Engineering Manager; exercises discretion and judgment on work priority on a regular basis; and high degree of creativity and initiatives are expected.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Functions as a member of the R&D process development discipline and works to execute the team's aggressive strategic objectives.
  • Researches and develops new technologies to enhance efficiencies, product quality, productivity, product performance, and cost.
  • Works with the Engineering Manager to develop, lead, oversee, and complete projects on time.
  • Develops and executes experiments at laboratory scale through production trials as needed to accomplish department goals. Collects, interprets, and reports data appropriately.
  • Hands on with trials; teaches, coaches, and mentors R&D process staff to troubleshoot trial issues.
  • Identifies and implements changes to the process to implement new products.
  • Troubleshoots production related problems and helps develop future solutions to these problems.
  • Ownership of the trial and trial line; flexible to adapt to changing work environment and priorities.
  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of related machinery and equipment for executing trials efficiently, possible operation applications, and assists in machinery and equipment specifications.
  • Develop understanding of product testing methods and product end use requirements. Develop the production capability to efficiently produce products that meet customer requirements.
  • Prepares various reports as required; and be willing to take on more responsibilities.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Job Specifications

Knowledge

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering related discipline (preferred chemical, mechanical, or plastics) or equivalent experience is required.
  • Minimum 3 years of profile extrusion experience, manufacturing or process development environment is preferred.
  • Working experience with AutoCad, / SolidWorks, or similar is preferred.
  • Strong technical orientation, utilize scientific method, able to use and build on technical education, training, and experience to perform well in an R&D work environment.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Preferred experience and knowledge on UFP's organization, culture, and product lines.

Skills and abilities

  • Proficiency in the use of the English language in reading, writing, and speaking. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to successfully interact with all organizational levels, suppliers, vendors, and the public.
  • Demonstrated proficiency to manage multiple tasks, pay attention to details, to set priorities, to develop timelines, and to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instruction, and ability to provide written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to be mobile in the work environment.
  • Ability to apply business math to manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to use a computer, and proficiency of the use of MS Office and other business and engineering software
  • Demonstrated skills in improving processes, leading projects, delivering projects on time, and developing efficiencies in manufacturing processes

Working Conditions

Working environment is favorable. Requires standing and walking for 75% of the time, talking, hearing and seeing are essential duties; sitting at a desk for long periods of time are also required. Travel may be required.
